Pc Pools Announces Key Safety Tips for Pool Owners September 29, 2011 03:58 PM

St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN October 6th, 2011 Pc Pools, one of America’s leading direct marketers of above ground pools and pool supplies for residential and commercial pool owners offers several key tips for pool safety.  It is important to note that pool safety is a year-round necessity.

Accidents can still occur when a pool is closed down, which is why it is imperative for a pool owner to be as proactive as possible in accident prevention. Constant-Eyes-On (CEO) Supervision – Never turn a blind eye to a child when he or she is near a closed down pool. Children might try to slip under a pool cover and become trapped, which is why pool owners must exercise diligence and attention at all times. It is important to understand that a few seconds is all a child needs to get into serious trouble. Adults must segment the supervisory responsibilities involving a swimming pool.

Marketing Director Ted Robinson had this to say about pool safety, "The more eyes on the children, the less chance there is for an accident to occur. Raising awareness to guests is also useful, especially if they bring their children over. This is especially important when pool owners have large gatherings at their houses. Such events break from routine supervisory situations, so if a child goes missing at such a gathering, adults should first check the pool. In a moment when every second matters, checking the most hazardous place first is always the right decision."

Robinson continued, "Winter maintenance is important in addressing safety issues. Just because the pool water is too cold to swim in does not mean that the water clarity should be ignored. Pool covers should be drained of the water that has accumulated from rain. Debris should be cleared off of a pool cover on a regular basis to prevent tears. Fencing should be kept up all year round to prevent unexpected pool entry. Additional security measures include a locked pool gate, fold-up entry systems, and pool ladder rollguards (for above ground pools). Fencing should be at least four feet high on in-ground pools, especially if a heavy-duty safety pool cover is not being used.

Lastly, parents should be proactive in educating not only their children, but the other children in the neighborhood on proper pool safety techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics states, "lessons may actually reduce the risk in drowning for children ages one to four years old." Such lessons go beyond traditional swimming lessons and focus on how to react to becoming trapped in a pool, or what to do if a child becomes involved in a pool-related emergency. This goes back to making all of the children in one’s neighborhood aware of the proper safety procedures involved with swimming pools."
