St. Paul, MN June 17th 2011 - Pc Pools, one of America’s leading direct marketers of above ground pools and pool supplies for residential and commercial pool owners reports that according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission over 1 million pool drain covers have been recalled. This latest recall was issued after questions were raised about the prior testing methods used in the original process.
The severity and breadth was not lost on Scott Wolfson, CPSC public affair director in his announcement. "We know this is a very difficult message to Share with the public as we roll into Memorial Day weekend, but better to address this now than in the middle of the swim season when a child gets hurt on one of these drains."
The issue came down to the level of flow rate through the drain covers. The CPSC stated that the recalled pool drain covers were incorrectly rated to handle the flow of water through the cover, which could pose a possible entrapment hazard to swimmers and bathers.
Pc Pools Marketing Director had this to say, "A large number of previously "approved" pool drain covers which were installed during the VGB compliance period will have to be replaced. Although we at Pc Pools do not install these products, we realize the seriousness of this recall and will comply with the new regulations. The recall will create a great deal of work for the same pool companies that installed these pool drain covers the first time around. In addition, this may be costly to the manufactures as well in a trying economic period for the pool industry in general."
Eight manufacturers were named in the CPSC announcement as part of the recall: A&A Manufacturing, AquaStar Pool Products, Color Match Pool Fencing, Custom Molded Products, Hayward Pool Products, Pentair Water Pool and Spa, Rising Dragon Plastics, and Waterway Plastics.
