Arctic Armor Pool Cover Highlights

Winter pool covers are important for general maintenance and properly closing a pool at the end of the season. Winter pool covers help prevent leaves, dirt, and debris from falling into the pool during the winter, leading to far less clean up and an easier start-up in the spring. The Blue Wave® Arctic Armor™ pool cover line, manufactured by Blue Wave Pool Products, offers a complete variety of in-ground and above-ground pool covers and winter accessories to suit every pool owner's needs. Here are some highlights about the many great reasons to invest in the best winter pool cover you can buy: arctic armor sheild

LONG-LASTING WOVEN MATERIAL MAKES THESE POOL COVERS STRONGER
Arctic Armor pool covers are woven from strong, long-lasting polyethylene tapes to hold up against to winter's worst punishment.

REDUCE ALGAE GROWTH IN YOUR POOL WATER
The extremely strong and tight woven fabric that makes up an Arctic Armor pool cover will not allow light to pass through it. And without sunlight, algae growth is stopped in its tracks!
BIGGER OVERLAP LEADS TO LONGER WEAR ON ABOVE-GROUND POOL COVERS
Blue Wave’s manufacturing process does not limit the woven fabric. Each Arctic Armor above ground pool cover has an extra foot of material—making it the largest overlap in the industry and a super value! More material less money. A 4-ft. overlap enables a better fit, especially on above ground pools with extra wide top-rails. This extra fabric also takes up some of the slack during windy weather, preventing excessive wear and tear like inferior, smaller, 3-foot overlap pool covers. Better still, the arctic armor pool covers are held secure with a heavy-duty vinyl-coated cable and fastener anchored by rip-proof metal grommets.
ENJOY WELL-FASTENED SECURITY WITH ALL IN GROUND POOL COVERS
Blue Wave Arctic Armor in ground pool covers are equipped with loops every four feet to secure water bags and corner grommets, which allow for extra tie-down in windy areas. The pool cover is manufactured five feet longer and wider than the pool size.

All Blue Wave Arctic Armor in ground pool covers are super strong and built to last. Protect your in ground or above ground pool and extend your hard-earned money. Make a smart purchase and buy a Blue Wave Arctic Armor pool cover that will go the distance pool season after pool season.

WHY USE ARCTIC ARMOR WINTER POOL COVERS?

Winter pool covers are an important part of the swimming pool winterizing maintenance process. Pool covers keep swimming pools clear of leaves and other unwanted debris. Some winter pool covers are made of mesh to allow rain water to pass through the cover. Winter pool covers also reduce the risk of frost damage to your pool.

From a security standpoint, good-quality pool covers truly add up by helping prevent pets, and other small animals from falling into the pool when they attempt to walk on the pool cover or drink the accumulated water.

Almost any above ground or in ground pool—no matter its shape or size—can be fit with a pool cover, including shaping for steps and ladder entry points. All Arctic Armor winter pool covers are made from UV-stabilized polyethylene fabric for strength and security, and stitched with anti-rot thread. Normally these pool covers feature anti-abrasion strips and PVC reinforcement affixed at potentially high-wear areas.
Quick Tip:
The scrim or strands are the weave tightness in the underlying thread construction of the pool cover. The higher the scrim number, the better the quality of the winter pool cover. In areas that reach freezing temperatures, it is important to close a pool properly. This varies greatly between in-ground and above-ground pools. By taking steps to properly secure the pool, it lessens the likelihood that the superstructure will be damaged or compromised by freezing water.

TYPES OF ARCTIC ARMOR™ WINTER POOL COVERS:

Solid Winter Pool Covers:
Rugged polyethylene scrim and coating means this pool cover can withstand winter’s worst weather. Arctic Armor pool covers are manufactured with U.V. protected material so they will last for years in direct sunlight. The pool cover’s black underside retards algae growth and heat sealed seams means a crystal clear pool next spring. The big 4 foot overlap on above ground pool covers and 5 foot overlap on in ground pool covers ensures a proper fit and helps the winter cover from stretching and ripping like inferior pool covers with smaller overlaps. Pool covers also provide some added safety for preventing unwanted pool entry, but should not be relied on for that purpose. Arctic Armor Winter Pool Covers are available for Above Ground and In Ground pools, in Bronze, Silver and Gold quality levels. They are backed by 8-Year (bronze), 12-Year (silver) or 15-Year (gold) Warranties.

Mesh Winter Pool Covers:
Arctic Armor Rugged Mesh pool covers make spring clean-up a snap. The secret to this unique pool cover is the tightly woven polyethylene scrim material that holds together to help prevent gaps or holes developing in the cover. Rugged mesh cover material allows only rain water and very fine silt to pass through. Since this rugged pool cover is made of mesh that is very lightweight, simply lift it off in the spring. No heavy water to drain off or time consuming water pumping. Simply remove the rugged mesh pool cover and vacuum up the fine silt and open your swimming pool.  In addition, the rugged mesh pool cover’s fine mesh allows rain and snow to slowly fill your pool, saving water and pool chemicals in the spring. Since the scrim cover material is so tightly woven, the pool cover allows almost no sunlight to pass through and helps eliminate algae-free swimming pool in the spring. Arctic Armor's rugged mesh pool covers are made from tough U.V. protected woven polyethylene that is strong enough to handle ice, snow, sleet and high winds. Rugged double stitched hems are triple reinforced for strength and the winter pool cover's black underside retards algae growth. Available for Above Ground and In Ground swimming pools, Arctic Armor Rugged Mesh Pool Covers are backed by an 8-Year Manufacturer Warranty!

Pool Leaf Nets:
Lightweight pool covers made of an open weave material that fits on top of a winter pool cover or solar pool cover to prevent accumulation of wet, heavy, saturated leaves and twigs on top of the cover. These nets ensure faster removal of leaves, and prolong the life of a winter or solar cover. They can be used in any season, and are a big plus if a pool is located in an area surrounded by trees. The open weave design allows water to pass through the net, but will block twigs, leaves and trash. Leaf nets facilitate the removal of a pool cover every time. Arctic Armor Leaf Nets are available for Above-Ground and In-Ground pools and are backed by a 4-Year Warranty.

Safety Pool Covers:
Security for an in ground pool has never been more important. Safety pool covers are one of the most important pieces of pool equipment for establishing safe conditions and peace of mind—especially for pool owners with children in their homes, visiting or in the neighborhood. Available in mesh or a solid vinyl material, these safety covers function as a maintenance tool as well as a safety barrier. All safety pool covers must meet the requirements in the ASTM standards F1346-91 (1996)—meaning the cover must be able to support the weight of a small child or animal that may walk onto the cover. A proper safety pool cover is securely anchored into the pool deck and lies flush so there are no gaps between the pool and the safety cover. A good safety pool cover will provide peace of mind only if it is made from material that will not tear, so that a hole will not increase in size and instead can be patched. Safety pool covers follow the shape of the pool with the proper number of pool deck anchors embedded around the swimming pool to hold the safety cover in place.

MORE POOL COVER BASICS

For an in-ground pool, a solid winter pool cover is held in place by water bags that are placed around the edge inside sleeves attached to the pool cover.

An above-ground pool uses the same type of solid winter pool cover, but instead it is held by a combination winch and vinyl-coated cable assembly that runs through grommets in the outside edge of the pool cover.

Inflatable air pillows rest on the water under the pool cover to allow the rain or melting water runoff of the winter cover.

Many winter covers are designed to block sunlight, which helps prevents algae growth in the pool water. Algae growth prevention is an important part of winterizing the pool. Winter covers actually lead to clearer easier to care for pool water and less expensive pool start-up processes in the spring.

Remember:
  • A covered swimming pool will see less freezing than an uncovered swimming pool.
  • The properly fitting safety pool cover will help protect children, adults and animals from falling into the pool water.
  • A winter pool cover will prevent leaves, dirt, and debris from entering a pool during harsh winter weather, resulting in less messy cleanup in the spring—and less stress.

Pool Winterizing 1-2-3
In climates where there is no risk of freezing, closing down the pool for winter while important is not so vital. But in preparation for freezing temperatures, the pipes of an in-ground swimming pool must be emptied. An above-ground pool also needs to be winterized and closed so that ice forming in and around the pool does not drag down the pool wall, collapsing its structure.

Swimming pool plumbing should be sealed with air—typically with rubber plugs—to prevent cracking from freezing water. The pool should be covered to prevent leaves and other debris from falling in. The winter pool cover is attached to the pool via a cable and winch and or a stretch cord and hooks fitted into the pool surround.

The pool skimmer should be closed off and sealed or a floating device is placed in the skimmer to prevent it from completely freezing and cracking. Floating objects such as life rings or basketballs should be removed or and can be placed in the pool to prevent freezing under the winter cover. Drain plugs on the pool filter should be removed after the filter has been cleaned and winter pool chemicals should be added to keep the pool water clean and easier to prepare the following spring.

Browse these step-by-step guides for the complete process of winterizing a pool.

How to winterize an above-ground swimming pool

Step 1
Prior to closing the pool; ensure that the water is chemically balanced. Adjust chemical levels if necessary. This is a very important step because chemically balanced water protects the pool from corrosion or scale buildup that can occur when the pool is shut down. Chemical levels should read as follows:
  • pH 7.2 - 7.6
  • Alkalinity 80 - 120 parts per million
  • Calcium Hardness 175 - 250 parts per million
  • Chlorine 1 - 3 parts per million
Quick Tip:
Use Blue Wave® Winterizing Pool Chemical Kits!
Comes with all the pool chemicals you need to winterize your pool, including FREE pool closing instructions!

Winterizing pool chemical
Step 2
Remove all pool deck equipment (pool ladders, pool rails, etc.)

Step 3
Brush down the sides and pool floor then vacuum. This is important because if any debris or dirt is left in the pool, staining can occur on the pool liner.

Step 4
Add Blue Wave winterizing pool chemicals by broadcasting them into the deep end of the pool to help protect water quality during the winter/off-season.

Step 5
Clean the pool filter, skimmer, and pump basket. Remove all unused chlorine product from the chlorinator. Cartridge filter elements and D.E. grids should be cleaned and stored. If a sand pool filter is used, it should be backwashed.

Step 6
A skimmer guard can be inserted in the pool skimmer and the return line plugged, or the pool water level can be lowered below the returns—where the water jets into the pool—and the skimmer. Either method is strictly user preference and suitable for pool closing time.
Quick Tip:
NEVER COMPLETELY DRAIN A POOL! This may cause the pool to collapse.
Step 7
All detachable, flexible hoses, these should be removed and stored.  Also remove all drain plugs from the pool pump, filter tank, and any other pool equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for specific equipment. Place all drain plugs in the pump basket for storage.

If the pool is hard plumbed, use an air compressor or Shop Vac (attached to the blower side of the vacuum) to blow water out of the piping system by forcing air down the skimmer and through the pool plumbing.

Step 8
If using an air pillow, inflate by Shop Vac. Tie the air pillow at two places and position it in the center of the above ground pool. Tie strings to the pool wall so the pillow will not move during cover installation. Air pillows are commonly used, but not absolutely necessary. They are a good idea in colder climates in case the water freezes and expands. The water will freeze inward on the pillow instead of outward, which may damage the pool wall. Air pillows are NOT used to create a dome-like effect to keep rain off of the cover. This will not work. Instead, the rain water will simply settle around the pillow.

Step 9
Position a winter pool cover over the pool surface, black side down.
  • Winter Pool Cover installation process, above-ground pools:
Place the cover over the pool, and then thread the cable through loops or grommets. Use the winch provided with the cover to tighten the cable.
  • Winter Pool Cover installation process, above-ground pools with decks:
Place water tubes end to end around the edge of the pool. Fill the water tubes 3/4 full of water. DO NOT OVERFILL because water expands when freezing and it could burst the water tubes. Never use bricks, concrete blocks, or other objects to secure the winter cover since they can damage both the pool cover and the pool or pool deck.
Step 10
Some winter covers may require placing a cover pump in the center of the pool cover to drain off excess water.  This is very important because too much water on top of the winter cover can cause the cover to rip or pull the cover and water tubes into the pool. This will result in a very messy cleanup.

Quick Tip:
NEVER COMPLETELY DRAIN A POOL! This may cause the pool to collapse.

Step 7
Cap off pool return lines by using threaded plugs, or use expandable rubber plugs if the returns are not threaded. Add pool antifreeze by pouring it through the skimmer. Use one gallon of antifreeze per 10 feet of distance from the pump to the pool.

Step 8
Remove all drain plugs from the pool pump, filter tank, and any other pool equipment. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for specific equipment. Place all drain plugs in the pump basket for storage.

Step 9
Install a winter pool cover over the pool surface, black side down.

DO NOT OVERFILL since water expands when freezing and it could burst the water tubes. SOLID WINTER POOL COVER INSTALLATION

IN-GROUND WINTER POOL COVER INSTALLATION

1. If you find that your pool cover is too small, do not stretch it across the pool in an attempt to make it fit. Your pool cover should fit your pool as shown in the diagram below.
winter installation
2. Your pool cover is made to have rainwater accumulate on top of it all winter. This water will not damage your pool cover in any way. Do not pump off the cover during the Fall. Water on top of the cover will hold it in place and protect your winter pool cover from wind damage.
3. Your winter cover is sized for a maximum water drop below the deck of 18". If you normally drop your water more than 18" in the Fall, return your pool cover for a larger size. Refer to Diagram 1 for proper fit.
4. Do not use bricks or sharp blocks to weigh down your pool cover as they will cut, scuff and damage the pool cover. We recommend using water tubes to secure the winter pool cover.
5. If you tie your winter pool cover to a fence or other permanent structure, be sure to use a flexible bungee cord. This flexible cord will allow the pool cover to shift as snow and ice accumulates without pulling out the corner tabs or straps. Water tubes must still be used to secure the winter pool cover.

ABOVE-GROUND SOLID WINTER POOL COVER INSTALLATION

1. Place winter pool cover over the entire pool and let it rest on the pool water.
2. Your winter cover is made to have rainwater accumulate on top.   This water will not damage your winter pool cover in any way. Do not pump off the pool cover during the Fall. Water on top of the winter cover will hold it in place and protect the winter cover from wind damage.
