Why Use Gorilla Pool Floor Pad?

Above-ground pools should be placed on pool floor padding for two important reasons:

Installation of padding underneath the swimming pool liner protects it from stones, roots, or other sharp debris that might cut the pool liner and cause a leak.

Gorilla pool floor pad—It’s history

Gorilla Pad is a super tough nonwoven geo-textile used for decades in many other non-pool applications. For example, geo-textile membranes often are laid down in landfills before the landfill liner is installed to ensure that the liner is not cut or damaged by the ground beneath it. Any damage to a landfill liner would be catastrophic as pollutants would be allowed to penetrate drinking water supplies.

Landfill operators around the country entrust this vital liner function to geo-textiles—such as those found in Gorilla Pad—because the materials are so tough. Ordinary foam type pool padding could never deliver this type of protection.

Since a swimming pool liner must be protected from any puncturing, geo-textiles started finding applications in the pool supplies industry about eight years ago. Getting started with gorilla pad

After five years in the field and well over 15,000 quick and easy installations, Gorilla Pool Floor Pad® is well established as the premier protective padding for pool liners. It boasts the perfect combination of strength and cushioning, as well as ease of installation. This popular pool floor padding is cut and seamed to fit your pool’s shape, so there is no additional cutting, trimming, or taping as commonly found with foam padding.

Traditional foam padding has been used for years as an underlayment for above ground pool liners. The foam, which is about 3/8-inch thick, provides some needed cushioning for above ground pools installed on hard surfaces. Happy Bottom® is delivered in 4-inch wide strips that must be cut and taped on the job site, generating additional installation time and headaches.

Because foam is a flimsy substance, it provides almost no protection from rock, grass, and root damage.

Gorilla Pad® takes the best characteristics of foam and combines that with super strength and ease of installation. Since Gorilla Pad® is made of super-strong polyester geo-textile, it will also help prevent cuts caused by glass, stones, or roots. It will protect the above ground pool liner from sharp underground hazard and lengthen its life.

Gorilla Pad® weighs in at a full eight ounces. It provides all the cushioning of 3/8-inch foam. Gorilla Pad significantly reduces "foot printing" on a sand bottom base and the pool liner is protected if installed on a hard surface.

Helpful Hint:
The use of pool cove is highly recommended in the pool liner corners, as well as wall foam on the sidewall of the pool to cushion the pool liner and decrease heat loss.

INSTALLING GORILLA POOL FLOOR PAD

Gorilla Pad® is designed to be installed easily in minutes. To save even more time, read all directions completely before beginning installation.

These instructions are for a new above ground pool installation.

Step 1
Excavate the pool site as directed in your pool kit installation manual. Remove all rocks or other objects from the pool site that may damage the pool bottom. It may be necessary to use a tamping tool or sod roller to produce a smooth, firm, and level surface upon which to install the above ground pool.

IMPORTANT: You must have prepared a firm, level surface before setting up your above ground pool.

Step 2
After assembling the above ground pool and prior to installing the pool liner, lay Gorilla Pad down on the subsurface. Since Gorilla Pad is pre-cut and seamed, it should fit easily on the inside of your round or oval pool. If any of the pad is too long, cut off excess with a knife to ensure it lies on the bottom of the pool.

Step 3
For additional protection, install pool cove around the parameter of the inside wall of the pool. Follow instructions on the box.

Step 4
Be sure that Gorilla Pad is smooth and without wrinkles before installing your above ground pool liner. Fill the pool with water.

FAQ: Pool Liners and Pool Liner Pads

Sometimes we all need a little help clarifying pool product lingo. Here we present 10 Frequently Asked Questions regarding pool liners and pads.

1) What is a unibead pool liner?
A unibead pool liner is a two-in-one product, giving the customer the option of using the pool liner as a beaded pool liner, which requires a bead receiver; or as a J-Hook pool liner, which hooks onto the wall of pool.

2) Why do I have grass growing through the bottom of the pool liner, and is this covered under warranty?
This is not covered under warranty. The earth underneath the pool liner was not properly taken care of before installation, causing sharp blades of grass to grow beneath the pool liner surface and poke through. While weed killer can be used, you must ensure that its properties will not affect the pool liner to any degree.

3) How can I find a leak in my pool liner?
Take some food coloring and distribute it where think there might be a leak. If a leak is present, the food coloring will be drawn to it. Patch kits will help rectify the problem.

4) How many pieces of coping strips do I need to attach my pool liner?
Multiply the pool size by 3.14 and round it up. Divide this number by 2, which will equal the number of pieces of coping.

5) How much of a pool cove should I have for my above ground pool?

There should be a 4-5-inch cove.

6) What is the wall depth of a beaded/unibead pool liner?

A 48-inch pool liner measures 43 ½ inches and a 52-inch pool liner measures 46 ½ inches.

7) What is the lowest temperature to install a pool liner?

65 degrees for a beaded pool liner and 60 degrees for an overlap pool liner.

8) Why doesn't my pool liner fit?
To determine why your above ground pool liner is too small or doesn't fit properly, use this checklist of possible problems:

It is too cold. Vinyl will shrink and stiffen when the temperature is below 65 degrees. The sun will soften the vinyl making it easier to pack folds and wrinkles.
Your above ground pool is out of round.
There should be two inches of sand or Styrofoam under the pool liner, with a cove along the inside of the pool wall. Do not use coarse sand.
The above ground pool may not be level.
The pool liner may have been installed unevenly. Verify that the bottom seam of the pool liner is centered in the pool. The pool liner may be pulled to one side.

9) What is the measurement on an overlap pool liner?
An overlap measures 54 inches and is used for both a 48-inch and 52-inch wall.

10) When should I cut in the skimmer and return in my replacement pool liner?
The pool skimmer and return should be cut in when the pool is one-third to halfway full of water. This will allow the pool liner to stretch into place before any cuts are made in it. If this step is done prematurely it could cause the pool liner to tear, or wrinkles to form.
